Makassar

Makassar (population of 1.37 million) has been implementing their smart city initiative for the past two years. Part of the smart city initiative is improving public transport (e.g. smart card payment system, traffic management), transport corridor development and improved public spaces with better accessibility and urban safety. The city also aims to stimulate economic development by engaging local business and street hawkers through proper relocation. Makassar is vulnerable to impacts of climate change (extreme weather events such as typhoons) and is promoting climate change adaptation strategies. These include disaster and flood management as well as constructions for coastal protection.
